Comfort Food: “Channeling Ingrid”

Ma

As many of you may know, our mother, Ingrid duCille, passed away on September 7, 2013, after a period of failing health. I’m sitting here in my kitchen, two days after the funeral, having just assembled a batch of “Thatcher St. Spaghetti Sauce”, albeit not in my usual ‘happy to be in the kitchen’ state.

The term “comfort food” has been very real to me over the last few days. After 2+ weeks of eating poorly, at best, I’ve been reminded that comfort comes from close friends and family – and some of the incredible, yet simple dishes that those friends and family members have brought to the table. They’ve all beaten the hell out of the Wendy’s, McDonald’s, and Burger King sludge I’ve been existing on since before Labor Day. As I get back to “normal” over the next few weeks, I hope to spend some time in this blog to highlight some of these “comfort food” dishes. And yes, I’ll include the recipes! Thank you all for your kindness, support, and understanding during this recent rough patch of life. I’m looking forward to better days ahead. So long for now, and rest in peace, Ma. 🙂

About the Picture…….

April 15, 2013 started out as a good day. It was one of those “half-baked”, holidays, which meant that I was able to drive myself all the way to Boston, rather than doing the Commuter Rail or Red Line routine to get to work. The office was fairly quiet, those in the office were cheerful, and we were especially productive in getting “caught up” on tasks.

I spent the last 30 minutes of my (shortened) work day on April 15, sending frantic text messages and making futile calls to cell phones that didn’t ring. I verified the safety of everyone in our firm, then packed up & jumped in the car for a surreal drive back to the Cape. The Boston Marathon runners & spectators who trickled through the Chinatown / Leather District neighborhoods all seemed dazed as they wandered East. It was odd, seeing a string of emergency vehicles in the left hand lane headed North, as I made my way South on I-93.

The preparation of the Lemon Cake would help me to expend my nervous energy, and calm my nerves on the evening of April 15, 2013…….

Creativity in the kitchen comes to me at different times, in different ways. Check in every so often & let’s “create” 
